To Buy Or Not To Buy? – Owlcrate – February 2021 – Magic Unleashed

Good morning all! Time for another To Buy or Not to Buy post, this time for Owlcrate’s upcoming February box. The theme is Magic Unleashed, and it contains a book that I’ve been very excited for since last summer! Keep reading to learn more about the box!

As usual, all of the opinions in this post are my own, so please take them with a grain of salt, and don’t be offended if my least favorite fandom is your favorite. We all have our own preferences. 🙂

SPOILER ALERT! These posts will name the included book of the month, which often isn’t announced in advance. Please don’t continue to read if you want to be surprised by the book.

My Thoughts

Owlcrate’s book of the month is The Gilded Ones. For those of you who don’t know, the release date for this book got pushed back from last year due to Covid. Despite this, Fairyloot was able to release a gorgeous early paperback edition with exclusive sprayed edges and foiling as a second book in their June 2020 box. I didn’t get that box, I managed to get a secondhand copy on Facebook. If you were a Fairyloot subscriber last June, be warned that you’ll get a duplicate of the book, albeit with different customizations! Owlcrate’s edition will just include an exclusive cover and foiling on the case, which aren’t the most exciting customizations. I’m sure that the edition will be beautiful, but I was really hoping for sprayed edges, or at least art on the reverse side of the dust jacket. Owlcrate and the other boxes have definitely spoiled me and set the bar very high, so whenever boxes don’t have bigger customizations, I feel the slightest bit disappointed.

Let’s talk about this box’s fandoms and items! This month, Owlcrate will be including the first of a new collection of items, which will be a series of book tins inspired by A Darker Shade of Magic. The tins will be designed by @forensicsandflowers. I’m honestly a bit sad that all of the tins will be inspired by ADSOM, which I’m not really a fan of. I’ve loved Owlcrate’s past book tins (I was so sad when they didn’t include any in 2020!) and this one, which will be larger, is being designed by an artist I really admire! If it were any other fandom, I’d be super excited and would be dancing all around the house, but this doesn’t thrill me, unfortunately, which makes it all the more worse for me that it’s the first of a collectable series. Depending on the design/quotes, I might try to get it secondhand in one of the Facebook groups, but it’s not going to be an item I’m dying to get.

Aside from that item, there will be items inspired by We Hunt the Flame, Star Daughter, Legendborn, and Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I like that 3/5 fandoms are past Owlcrate book picks, and that they were written by authors of color! I worry that the items might be smaller ones due to the fact that the book tin will be larger, but we’ll have to see about that. Owlcrate’s items haven’t really been my favorite lately, so I don’t really feel like I’m missing out.

All-in-all, I’m really not too interested in the box this month. I already have the book and while I’m enjoying it, it’s not a book I need to own multiple copies of, especially if it doesn’t have a lot of special must-have exclusive features. I’m pretty confident that I’d be able to find any item I missed out on online for a decent price, so I’m not too worried. I’m sure that some people will love this box, but I’m just not one of them.

  • The book tin is the first of a new collectable series
  • Featured book is written by a BIPOC
  • 3/5 Fandoms were past Owlcrate books written by POC authors
  • US Based Shipping Facility

  • The book tin series is focused around 1 specific series (ADSOM)
  • Book was already included in June 2020 Fairyloot (not necessarily a con, but something to be aware of if you got the box last summer.)
  • Owlcrate’s items haven’t really interested me lately.

Thanks for reading my ramble! Let me know in the comments what you think of the book, theme, and items! Would you get this box?
