To Buy Or Not To Buy? – Illumicrate – A Court of Silver Flames – Mini Box

Okay y’all, it’s time for an emergency freak out. (I know that this makes for two “To Buy or Not to Buy” posts in a row, but I couldn’t resist drafting this up last night! Illumicrate recently announced a special mini box for A Court of Silver Flames. As a huge ACOTAR fan, I was obviously very excited. I’ve never ordered from Illumicrate before, as the UK shipping costs are usually astronomical for me in the US. However, this mini box is very intriguing, so keep scrolling to learn more about the box and hear my thoughts on it! (Skip to the bottom of the post for a TL;DR Pros and Cons list if you’re in a hurry.)

As usual, all of the opinions in this post are my own, so please take them with a grain of salt, and don’t be offended if my least favorite fandom is your favorite. We all have our own preferences. 🙂

My Thoughts

I am very, very excited for this. I was pretty bummed after missing out on the Faecrate Wicked Saints box which sold out impossibly quickly, but hey, that just means more money to put to this box, right?

Since we know already what’s coming in this box, let’s get into the value of it, which can help in deciding if it’s something you want to buy. For £42 (which comes to about $57, ouch!) you’ll get one standard copy of the book A Court of Silver Flames, (no signature or special customizations) a dust jacket set for all 5 books designed by Elithienart, and a previously released pin set from one of their 2018 ACOFAS box. This definitely seems very light for a nearly $60 box. In USD, the book retails for about $20, and while I can’t exactly price dust jackets, they’re each works of art (call them individual art prints if you will) so a set of 5 highly designed jackets is probably worth $50 or more, considering that most smaller art prints cost $10+ each. The pin set itself consists of two fairly sizable pins, which could probably go for $20 from a normal pin vendor. All together, we have a value of about $90 from these few items. While I wish that there were more items in the box I get that Illumicrate had to follow Bloomsbury’s specifications in order to put this box together at all.

I’m mainly excited about the dust jacket set. The artist Illumicrate has hired has been posting a lot of ACOTAR art on her page, and it’s all so lovely. She actually posted this dust jacket art on her instagram not long after ACOSF was announced, and while apparently this isn’t what Illumicrate’s will look like, it makes me excited for what’s to come. I personally own the original covers of the first 4 books, and I’m not thrilled about the cover repackaging. This will help my covers look cohesive! The set is also the only thing truly exclusive to this box, as the book is the standard edition that you could get anywhere, and the pins were included in a past Illumicrate ACOFAS box.

The pin set is quite beautiful though. This photo shows what you’d be getting. I think it’s super pretty and I’d probably wear it on my favorite jacket rather than just keeping it on my pin banner. I’ve been seeing it around on Facebook and Instagram, but everytime I tried to get it, it was was too expensive for me. The prices I’ve seen make this box seem way more affordable.

All-in-all, I’m leaning heavily toward getting this box. I know it’s going to be a bloodbath to try to get it, but Illumicrate said that they stocked up on a lot (more than the number of subscribers, so it’ll definitely make it to the general sales.) I’ll have to weigh the budget and maybe sell off a few bookish items first to make some extra spending money for it, but if all goes well, I’ll get this box.

Pros

  • A set of beautiful dust jackets for all of the ACOTAR series books! (They’ll likely have character art, which will make them look more like the original covers with Feyre on them.)
  • The rare, elusive Stars Eternal, Night Triumphant Pin makes it’s return! (I’ve been trying to find that for a while now, but sellers always want to charge an arm and a leg for it.)

Cons

  • Not that much is included in the box. (Just the book, pin, and dust jacket.)
  • Standard Edition of the Book (I already have the B&N exclusive edition preordered, so I’d potentially end up with two copies.)
  • UK Shipping tends to be very expensive to the US.
  • I worry that Illumicrate or the artist might not make additional dust jackets for subsequent books after ACOSF.

Thanks for reading my ramble! Let me know in the comments what you think of this mini box and the items and book inside! Will you join me in the bloodbath that will be purchasing this box, or will you pass on it? Let me know in the comments!
