To Buy Or Not To Buy? – Owlcrate – January 2021 – From Olympus with Love

Hi all! Time to get back into writing blog posts again! (I took a little break for the holidays.) Of course, I simply had to come back with one of my favorite types of posts, the “To Buy or Not to Buy” posts! This time it’s for the upcoming January Owlcrate box, which has the theme “From Olympus with Love.”

As usual, all of the opinions in this post are my own, so please take them with a grain of salt, and don’t be offended if my least favorite fandom is your favorite. We all have our own preferences. 🙂

SPOILER ALERT! These posts will name the included book of the month, which often isn’t announced in advance. Please don’t continue to read if you want to be surprised by the book.

My Thoughts

Owlcrate and Fairyloot have the same book this month! If you haven’t seen my post about the Fairyloot January box, please check it out here! In that post, I already talked about my thoughts of the featured book, Lore. The Owlcrate edition has less customizations (just signed with an exclusive cover.) While I love Owlcrate’s exclusive covers, this one will likely just be a smaller color swap change (I’m thinking maybe a black or gold background?) In comparison to the Fairyloot edition, the Owlcrate edition seems a bit lackluster in concept. I’ll have to see it in person to make my final decision on which edition is prettier.

As for the items in this month’s box, they’re all themed around Greek mythology and the gods and goddesses. There are no fandom items, which I’m kind of excited about in comparison to Fairyloot’s box, which is more fandom specific to Greek mythology. Owlcrate’s items have been a bit hit or miss in the past year, but I’m hoping that they listen to customer feedback and improve. They said that there will be a substantial item in the box, which is exciting!

In the end, I’ve decided not to get this box, and to go with Fairyloot instead. Fairyloot’s customizations this month just completely outside the Owlcrate ones, and even though I’m leaning more toward Owlcrate’s items, it’s usually pretty easy to pick up Owlcrate items secondhand in the BST groups on Facebook

Pros

  • Another Highly anticipated release! (It would likely be hard to find the book for a reasonable price later.)
  • I love woodmarks!
  • It’s a standalone novel!
  • US based box (affordable shipping for me)

Cons

  • Not too interested in Greek mythology, so a box themed completely around it isn’t entirely my cup of tea.
  • Same book as Fairyloot’s January Box
  • Owlcrate’s items haven’t thrilled me lately 😦

Thanks for reading my ramble! Let me know in the comments what you think of the book, theme, and items! Would you get this box?

  1. I’m really on the fence still about getting this box or not. I’ve been skipping pretty much every box this year because OC’s quality has really taken a dive this year.

    1. Agreed! I’m really hoping that they listen to their customers (or take note of the number of people who have unsubscribed or skipped in the recent months.) and improve. I know that the box got a new co-curator within the past year, and it seems like her style just isn’t meshing well with what most of the loyal subscribers want.
