To Buy Or Not To Buy? – Fairyloot January 2021 – Greek Mythology

Okay, it feels soooo weird to be writing a post with “2021” in the title! 2020 has been such a strange year, and while I’m happy to see it go, I’m blown away by how fast it’s gone.

Anyway, it’s time to talk about Fairyloot’s first 2021 box, which has the theme of Greek Mythology!

As usual, all of the opinions in this post are my own, so please take them with a grain of salt, and don’t be offended if my least favorite fandom is your favorite. We all have our own preferences. 🙂

SPOILER ALERT! These posts will name the included book of the month, which often isn’t announced in advance. Please don’t continue to read if you want to be surprised by the book.

Anticipated Book of the Month: Lore by Alexandra Bracken

Early Reveals: Metal Enamel Bookmark designed by @Monolimeart and a booksleeve designed by @chattynora

My Rationale

I’ll start by talking about the book of the month, Lore. I previously have read the Passenger duology by Alexandra Bracken, which I adored. I’m excited to see her back with a new standalone novel. The synopsis seems intriguing, but the Fairyloot exclusive customizations sound even more exciting, especially the stencil sprayed edges. I’m absolutely certain that it I don’t get this box, I won’t be able to get a copy of this later for a decent price. (I know that that’s my FOMO speaking, but I’m also interested in the book. Even if I don’t like it, I’m certain that I’d be able to trade or sell it off easily. People have been going crazy over Kingdom of the Wicked from the October Box, which had similar high value customizations!

The other items that have been announced are an enamel bookmark and a booksleeve. Since I’ve barely left my house since March, I haven’t really used any of my sleeves. They’ve just been piling up on top of one of shelves for the time being. I’m sure that I’ll be happy to have so many once I resume traveling when it’s safe, I’m not entirely thrilled to add another to my collection. However, I am excited to see that it’ll be more quote based than art based. I prefer that for carrying my books around in public. The bookmark sounds fun though! Can’t wait to see that, and the other items (Including the Lore item! So glad that they’re including merch inspired by the book of the month!)

I’m not the biggest fans of the fandoms included in the box (In fact, I haven’t really read most of them) but I’m hoping that the items are accessible to non-fans. If not, I could probably easily pass the items off to a friend. I’m mainly after the book here!

Pros

  • Another Highly anticipated release! (It would likely be hard to find the book for a reasonable price later.)
  • Amazing Book Customizations
  • US Based Shipping Facility (much lower shipping costs than when FL only had a UK shipping Facility)
  • It’s a standalone novel!
  • Fun enamel bookmark!

Cons

  • Not too interested in Greek mythology, so a box themed completely around it isn’t entirely my cup of tea.
  • I have enough booksleeves!!!

The Verdict

Yes! I really can’t pass up this box! The customizations are going to make this book into a highly sought after edition, and since it’s a standalone, I won’t have to worry about paying extra money for matching sequels or anything. I’m hoping that the items will be enjoyable by all, but even if they aren’t and are more fandom specific, I’m mainly after the book here. Everything else is extra in my eyes.

Thanks for reading my ramble! Let me know in the comments what you think of the book, theme, and items! Would you get this box?

    1. I spoke with their customer service yesterday! If you skip two months in a row, your subscription will no longer be active, but you’ll be able to reactivate without having to join the waitlist again! In my case, I skipped both November and December, but as long as I email them in December before Jan 1, I can reactivate and get the January box! 😀
