To Buy Or Not To Buy? – Owlcrate December 2020 – Love is a Battlefield

Today we’ll be looking at the December Owlcrate theme, which is Love is a Battlefield! Will this be the box to end my Owlcrate breakup, or will it continue into 2021?

As usual, all of the opinions in this post are my own, so please take them with a grain of salt, and don’t be offended if my least favorite fandom is your favorite. We all have our own preferences. 🙂

SPOILER ALERT! These posts will name the included book of the month, which often isn’t announced in advance. Please don’t continue to read if you want to be surprised by the book.

The Rationale

December tends to be a slow month for book releases, as publishers try to get books published before the holiday season. As a result, there aren’t a lot of books for boxes to pick from this month. Owlcrate chose to go with a November release for this month.

As I said in my November Fairyloot post, I’m not very interested in the book, These Violent Delights. Since I’m no longer interested in getting boxes for books that I’m only marginally interested in, this made the box an almost automatic no. Of course, I gave the items/fandoms some thought too, but I’ve found that I can almost always find Owlcrate items on Facebook BST sites or Mercari for cheap. I am excited to see what the Serpent and Dove and The Wrath and the Dawn items are, but considering that in the past, Owlcrate has just slapped a quote on a simple item (like a nail file!!!) for some fandom representation, I’m not confident that I’d be pleased with the items representing those fandoms. I’d honestly much rather just buy merch from Etsy rather than play the fandom lottery via a box I no longer trust.

  • I like most of the fandoms
  • If I don’t get it, it won’t be hard to find items secondhand online for reasonable costs

  • Haven’t been thrilled by Owlcrate’s recent items
  • Cost
  • The original cover is already so stunning!

The Verdict

Another month, another skipped Owlcrate! It feels quite nice to no longer feel trapped into a subscription by appealing themes and exclusive books. This break and these posts have really helped me to save money and only get boxes that I’ll genuinely enjoy. I will be skipping this box. Perhaps I’ll return to Owlcrate in the new year, but like I said, it will have to take a special book, items, and theme to get me back. December just isn’t it for me.
