To Buy Or Not To Buy? – Faecrate December 2020 – Hunted

Hey all! Time for yet another To Buy or Not to Buy post, this time for the Faecrate December box. The theme is “Hunted” and is possibly the last of their greek mythology-based themes (Unless they carry it forward into 2021!) I know that I said that I was done with book subscription boxes for the rest of 2020, but keep reading to find out about this box. Keep reading to find out my final decision.

As usual, all of the opinions in this post are my own, so please take them with a grain of salt, and don’t be offended if my least favorite fandom is your favorite. We all have our own preferences. 🙂

SPOILER ALERT! These posts will name the included book of the month, which often isn’t announced in advance. Please don’t continue to read if you want to be surprised by the book.

My Rationale

Ok, this is a tough one here! If you saw my unboxing post of the September Faecrate, you’ll know that while I thought that the book was gorgeous, the items weren’t really up to par with what I’ve come to expect from other book boxes. Since writing that post, I’ve only really used 2 of the items (the face mask and bookmarks.) I bring this up to say that if I were to get this box, I’m pretty sure that I wouldn’t really get my money’s worth from the items (both in terms of my own value or any potential resale value in the B/S/T groups.) I’m not even sure if the fandoms that I’m most excited for (Star Daughter and Raybearer) would represented well in the items. It seems that most of the budget for these boxes has gone to the pretty books and paying the included artists instead of the items (Which is great, don’t get me wrong, but I just wish that the items were a bit higher quality.)

Now, speaking of pretty books, that is my main draw to the box. The book of the month, A Deal with the Elf King is one that’s relatively new to my radar, but instantly became one of my most anticipated books of late 2020. (Go check out the synopsis and gorgeous cover if you haven’t already!) The Faecrate exclusive version will have sprayed edges (I’m really hoping for more metallic shimmery sprayed edges!) and a emboss design by Noverantale. I’m a huge fan of her designs, so I can’t wait to see what the design will look like. The book itself already comes with a gorgeous multi-colored emboss design on both the front and back cover, but after seeing how pretty The Maiden Ship and The Blackstone Ritual turned out, I’m sure that this one will be stunning and will demand a place on my shelf to be displayed.

Since Elise Kova is an indie author, getting her books in hardcover is a bit more expensive and difficult than other books. On Amazon, the hardcover is currently $30. The box itself would only be about $10 more, and for that extra $10 you’d get a bookplate, sprayed edges, the emboss design, plus around 5 items and a bonus ebook. Not a bad deal in my eyes, especially since I can anticipate this book becoming one of those super rare books that gets sold online for large amounts. If that’s the case, I’d much rather get it at $40 than $100!

Also, last thing; the theme art is gorgeous! I love that Faecrate includes it as an art print without the text on the back of the spoiler card! Perfect for displaying! (My collection of We Hunt the Flame merch has been growing rapidly recently, so this would be perfect.)

Pros

  • We Hunt the Flame Art Print/Theme Art
  • My last highly anticipated book of 2020 with awesome customizations!
  • Box cost is only a little bit higher than the hardcover book cost itself.
  • Fandoms that I like (Hopefully they’ll be represented well in the items.

Cons

  • Items probably won’t be the best quality
  • Might come late (potentially early 2021, due to a trend of their past boxes coming late)

The Verdict

Yes!!!! In my eyes, it really all comes down to the book this month! With the box price only being about $10 more than the standard hardcover book, I really can’t pass up on the chance to get a gorgeous copy of it, plus some items and art. Come November 1st, I’ll definitely be scrambling to get this box one last time in 2020. It will be a nice Christmas/New Year’s Gift to myself for getting through the absolute madness that is 2020.

Thanks for reading my ramble! Let me know in the comments what you think of the book, theme, and items! Would you get this box?
